Every book holds a narrative beyond its printed words, and Helen's Unfinished Verses is no different. This tale explores a mix of romance concealed in the shadows, ghosts bound to the library, and a young woman endeavoring to understand everything while aiding the ghosts in breaking their curse by narrating their stories and unraveling the mysteries of their deaths. But what is hidden behind the story and the cover? This post guides you through the author's writing journey, the inspiration for the cover design, and a preview of what's next.

Behind the Story – My Writing Journey

Dear Reader,

I am thrilled to announce the completion of my second book, "Helen's Unfinished Verses." This story continues the exploration of themes and characters introduced in "Emery and the Library of Shadows," delving deeper into the lives of the phantom page turners and the intricate mysteries that bind them together. The journey through this narrative has been both challenging and rewarding, as it expands upon the foundations laid in the first book while introducing new layers of complexity and emotion.

Inspiration Behind "Helen's Unfinished Verses"

The journey for this book began shortly after I finished the first. Helen's character, with her poignant struggles and unfinished story, inspired me to explore her narrative further. Initially, I envisioned the prologue as an unfinished poem by Helen, something that would capture her essence and the unresolved nature of her experiences. However, this concept evolved into a more intricate poem titled "The Painter," where Helen reflects on her love story with Edward, a talented painter whose family disapproves of their relationship. This poem not only sets the tone for their love story but also foreshadows the myriad challenges they encounter along the way, including societal expectations and personal sacrifices. The emotional weight of their relationship becomes a central thread that weaves through the entire narrative, highlighting the struggles of love in the face of adversity.

Developing the Narrative

In writing the introduction, I recapped the events of Book 1 while highlighting what Emery and her friends have been experiencing since then. This groundwork allowed me to set the stage for new mysteries emerging from the shadows, creating a rich tapestry of interconnected lives and stories. I crafted the first four chapters with a keen focus on Emery's struggle to honor Arthur's legacy while confronting the shadows of Helen's past. Each chapter became a canvas, painting the complexities of love, friendship, and the haunting presence of the unresolved. The narrative is structured in a way that invites readers to not only follow the characters' journeys but also to reflect on their own lives and the unresolved issues they may carry.

Emotional Depth and Character Growth

Throughout the writing process, I found myself deeply moved by the characters' experiences. Helen's journey through love, loss, and societal pressures resonated with my own struggles as a writer, making her story all the more relatable. The emotional rollercoaster of creating a narrative filled with themes of hope and redemption mirrored my personal journey, reminding me that storytelling has the power to connect us all. I witnessed Helen evolve from a character defined by her struggles into one who embraces her complexities and learns to navigate the challenges life presents. This growth is not only vital for her character but also serves as a reflection of the universal journey we all undertake in our pursuit of understanding and fulfillment.

Thematic Exploration

"Helen's Unfinished Verses" explores several profound themes, including:

  • The enduring nature of love beyond time and space, illustrating how connections can transcend the boundaries of life itself.

  • The importance of self-critique and the role of support systems in overcoming insecurities, emphasizing that we are often stronger together than apart.

  • The significance of our past in shaping our present and future, reminding us that our histories inform our identities and choices.

  • The essential role of libraries as community hubs for learning and connection, showcasing how these spaces foster creativity and collaboration.

  • The art of letter writing and other creative expressions as vital forms of communication, highlighting the beauty and power of words in conveying our innermost thoughts and feelings.

Behind the Cover Design

The cover of Helen's Unfinished Verses is more than just an image; it’s a visual embodiment of the book’s essence. When designing the cover, I wanted to personally draw and create it, ensuring it mirrored the book's narrative while offering readers subtle hints about its contents. Initially, I sketched a rough design on paper, starting with a gold picture frame border, which I eventually replaced with a rustic, aged paper look that I adore. I contemplated items that would resonate with the story and look appealing in the final printed version. I drew the cover, colored it with a specific scheme reflecting Helen and Edward, photographed it, and then digitized it for the publication submission. Below is a breakdown of each detail on the cover along with my rough draft and the finalized published versions!

  • The aged paper background is designed to resemble the vintage letter paper that Helen and Edward use for exchanging letters and poems. The orange flame hue is intended to echo the flames on the cover of book 1, "Emery and the Library of Shadows." An interesting detail is that the aged paper background shifts between various shades of yellow and orange depending on the light on the physical copies.

  • The bookshelves on the cover reference the cover of book 1 while also alluding to the library setting and the way stories connect these characters.

  • The letters with hearts symbolize the letter exchanges between Edward and Helen, which readers can see and read in the book. The purple and blue hearts reflect Helen and Edward's color schemes, as Helen is often seen wearing purple, while Edward frequently wears blue.

  • The quill and ink bottle represent Helen as a poet and writer, highlighting the exchanges between her and Edward, and emphasizing the importance of words and writing in connecting the past, present, future, and people.

  • The paintbrush and canvas symbolize Edward as a painter and artist, showcasing his ability to capture the beauty of the world around him.

  • The canvas depicts a woman observing a gallery of art and writing pieces, representing Helen in Edward's art studio/gallery. It also symbolizes Emery as she explores Helen's writings and Edward's paintings to learn about their romance and stories, mirroring the reader's journey through a gallery of stories and art with the characters.

  • The inclusion of Edward and Helen's initials in diagonal corners of the cover signifies the main characters of the romance and mystery within the story, and reflects Helen's book of poems, which Emery discovers in her exploration of their stories.

  • The oak tree above Helen's initials represents the oak tree where Helen and Edward began their secret courtship, a significant location in their love story.

  • The vines and flowers connecting their initials symbolize their connection and blossoming love, even in the face of shadows, darkness, and betrayal. The purple flowers also reference the purple flower found on the bookshelf on book 1's cover.

  • The title is written in blue to link Edward and Helen once more. The missing part of the "H" in the title signifies the missing piece that Emery and others must find to solve the mystery of Helen's death and how, without each other, Helen and Edward feel incomplete.

Looking Ahead

As I reflect on the completion of this book, I am filled with anticipation for how readers will connect with Helen's story. I hope that her journey, along with Emery's, inspires you to reflect on your own narratives and the stories that shape your lives. The themes of love, resilience, and the pursuit of understanding are universal, and I believe they will resonate with many.
