Writing a novel is often seen as a solitary task, but the journey behind Emery and the Library of Shadows was anything but simple or isolated. As the author, I want to share the story behind the story—the challenges, inspirations, and moments of discovery that shaped this book from a spark of an idea into a finished work. This post offers a window into the creative process, the practical steps I took, and the lessons learned along the way.
The Spark behind Emery and the Library of Shadows
This writing journey began with a whimsical notion I had about a group of spectral beings, collectively known as “The Phantom Page Turners.” These ghosts, each with their own unresolved tales and lingering regrets, found themselves trapped within the confines of a library, their stories waiting to be told and understood. The initial spark of inspiration came to me when I envisioned a vivid painting for an art contest, where these ethereal figures gathered in a moonlit forest, engaged in a mystical book club. This enchanting image of ghosts sharing their stories around an ancient oak tree, surrounded by the whispers of the wind and the rustling of leaves, captivated my imagination and set the stage for what would eventually evolve into a novel. The haunting beauty of this scene, where the moonlight danced upon the spectral forms and illuminated the pages of their forgotten books, painted a picture in my mind that was too vivid to ignore. The very idea of these phantoms, bound to the library by the weight of their untold stories, was a powerful metaphor for the struggles many face in life—how we often carry our past with us, unable to fully move on until we confront and understand it.

Initial Challenges
While the idea of a ghost book club was intriguing, I initially struggled to translate this concept into a narrative that felt authentic and impactful. The challenge lay not only in crafting the individual stories of these spectral beings but also in weaving them into a cohesive narrative that resonated with readers on a deeper level. It wasn’t until I had a heartfelt discussion with my brother and father that the idea began to take on a new dimension. Their insights helped me realize that the ghosts should be intricately connected to the library, unable to move on until their mysterious and often tragic deaths were resolved. This revelation sparked a wave of creativity, and I dove headfirst into plotting, writing, and refining the series. I envisioned each ghost as a reflection of different aspects of human experience—grief, love, betrayal, and redemption—each waiting for their moment to share their tale and find peace.
The First Draft
The first draft, which I completed in July 2025, was a significant milestone for me. However, upon reflection, I felt it fell short of my aspirations and ultimately decided to delete it entirely. It was a difficult decision, but I knew I needed to hold myself to a higher standard. The process of writing that first draft was both exhilarating and daunting, filled with moments of inspiration and frustration. I poured my thoughts onto the page, but as I reread my work, I recognized that the essence of what I wanted to convey was lost amidst the words. It was a moment of clarity that ultimately led me to understand the importance of quality over quantity in storytelling.
Refining the Narrative
By September 2025, I had crafted a second draft, filled with new ideas and character arcs, but as I reviewed it, I realized it still did not align with the overarching narrative I envisioned for the series. This realization was disheartening, yet it prompted me to take a step back and re-evaluate the core elements of the storyline. I spent countless hours refining the plot, deepening character motivations, and ensuring that each ghost’s backstory resonated with the readers on an emotional level. I began to explore the themes of forgiveness and closure, not only for the characters but also for myself as a writer. With a clearer vision in mind, I began writing the first book anew in October 2025, pouring my heart and soul into every word, determined to create a narrative that would not only entertain but also provoke thought and reflection.
The Third Draft
The third draft was a labor of love, a testament to the dedication and passion poured into the project. This phase of the writing process involved multiple rounds of meticulous edits and thoughtful revisions, each one aimed at refining the narrative and enhancing the overall coherence of the series. These edits and revisions were not limited to just the individual stories but encompassed the entire series as a cohesive whole.
One of the primary focuses was ensuring that each ghost member of the Phantom Page Turners emerged from a distinct time period. This careful selection not only added depth to the characters but also allowed for a rich exploration of their diverse backgrounds, experiences, and the historical contexts that shaped their lives. Each ghost was crafted with a specific main interest or job, reflecting the unique contributions they made during their lifetimes. For example, one ghost might have been a fervent supporter of the creative arts in the 2010s, another could have been an innovative librarian from the 1970s, and another a jazz singer from the 1920s, each contributing their unique perspective and wisdom to the group.
Moreover, the stories of these ghostly figures were intricately woven together, creating a tapestry of interconnections that transcended time. These connections manifested through shared emotions, similar experiences, and overlapping themes that resonated across generations. The challenge was to ensure that these narratives did not exist in isolation but rather complemented and enriched one another, fostering a sense of continuity and collective identity among the characters.
Most importantly, the series was structured to follow a chronological order, which was vital for maintaining clarity and enhancing the reader's understanding of the timeline. Arthur's story, set in the year 1972, serves as the foundation of this chronological journey. As the oldest member and the first librarian of the Four Seasons Public Library, Arthur's experiences and perspectives set the tone for the series. His role as the inaugural leader of the Phantom Page Turners group not only establishes his significance within the narrative but also provides a framework for the subsequent stories that follow.
In this way, the third draft evolved into a carefully crafted narrative, where each edit and revision contributed to a richer, more engaging exploration of the characters and their intertwined lives. The painstaking effort invested in this process reflects a commitment to storytelling that honors the past while inviting readers to engage with the timeless themes of memory, legacy, and the enduring power of literature.
One of the most significant changes I made was shifting the narrative perspective from third person to first person. This change was crucial in enhancing the emotional connection between the protagonist, Emery, and the readers. By allowing readers to experience the story through Emery’s eyes, I aimed to create a more immersive and relatable experience. This shift allowed me to delve deeper into Emery’s psyche, her fears, and hopes, and to explore her interactions with the ghosts in a way that felt genuine and heartfelt. After months of hard work and dedication, the final draft was completed on December 29, 2025. Despite my lingering apprehensions about how the book would be received, I felt a sense of accomplishment as “Emery and the Library of Shadows” prepared for publication. Proof copies arrived on January 7, 2026, and I then went through everything one last time, meticulously checking for any inconsistencies, including editing some dates that didn’t add up well in the journal and ledger entries. So the complete final manuscript draft was submitted on January 8, 2026, around 7 AM. I was as happy as I could be with the finalized draft and over the moon grateful that the book cover, which I hand drew, came out really well with vibrant colors and the look of being a hand-drawn piece of art, capturing the essence of the story within.
Reflection on the Journey
Throughout the tumultuous year of 2025, both the book and I faced a myriad of challenges that shaped not only the narrative I sought to weave but also my personal growth as a writer. The emotional rollercoaster of creating a story filled with profound themes of loss, hope, and redemption mirrored my own journey, reflecting the struggles and triumphs that often accompany the creative process. The weight of anxiety about the book’s reception loomed heavily in my mind, casting shadows of doubt that threatened to overshadow my motivation. Yet, despite these feelings, I persevered through the intricate phases of writing, editing, and navigating the inevitable emotional highs and lows that characterize the artistic endeavor. Every setback I encountered became a stepping stone towards growth, a lesson wrapped in the fabric of adversity. Each moment of doubt was met with a renewed determination to tell a story that mattered deeply—not just to me, but to anyone who might find solace or inspiration within its pages. My primary goal for this book has never been about seeking wealth or fame; rather, I aspire to foster genuine connections with readers, to create a bridge between our experiences, and to highlight the transformative power of storytelling in its many forms. As I poured my heart into “Emery and the Library of Shadows,” I envisioned it as more than just a collection of words; I hoped it would serve as a beacon for others, encouraging them to embrace their own narratives and share their unique experiences. In an increasingly fragmented world, I believe that storytelling has the power to unite us, to remind us of our shared humanity, and to continue the rich tradition of storytelling that has existed throughout history. I firmly believe that every story holds the potential to heal, to connect, and to inspire change, both within ourselves and in the world around us. The act of sharing our stories can break down barriers, foster empathy, and cultivate understanding among diverse communities. In this sense, “Emery and the Library of Shadows” is not just my story; it is an invitation for readers to reflect on their own journeys, to recognize the beauty in their struggles, and to find strength in vulnerability. As we navigate the complexities of life, may we all embrace the art of storytelling as a means of connection, growth, and transformation.
