In a digital era dominated by emails, texts, and social media messages, the beauty of handwritten communication often fades into the background, forgotten amidst the clicks and taps on screens. Yet, tucked away in the pages of books, the flaps of postcards, and the creases of old letters, lies a treasure trove of poignant tales and heartfelt words - bookmarks that once held these cherished and fleeting moments in time.

The Forgotten Bookmarks Project: Unveiling Hidden Stories

Peering into the Past

The Forgotten Bookmarks Project delves into the world of lost and abandoned bookmarks, shedding light on the remnants of a bygone era where handwritten correspondence was the heart and soul of communication. From tender poems to whimsical post-it notes adorned with intricate designs, each bookmark serves as a portal to the past, offering a glimpse into the intimate thoughts and emotions of its sender.

Research Results

Two hundred eleven written ephemera pieces were recently discovered during a transition from one written category to another. Among these findings were a variety of items, including one hundred sixty notes, thirty-six lists, eight poems, three bible verses, two announcements, and one pledge and essay each. These items shed light on the diverse ways in which individuals use written materials for various purposes.

Notes emerged as the most prevalent type of ephemera, often found in the form of post-it notes or simple pieces of paper serving as bookmarks. Among the notes, it was intriguing to note that grocery lists were the most commonly used and abandoned by readers, hinting at the mundane yet essential nature of such lists in daily life. Poems, on the other hand, stood out as the most frequently discovered bookmark showcasing creative writing within the realm of written ephemera.

The librarian staff, in their observation of these findings, noted a common challenge with written ephemera – the lack of identifiable information to return these items to their owners. This predicament often leads to these pieces remaining unclaimed within the library's collection. Despite this, the librarians have acknowledged a growing interest in preserving certain notes and poems, such as the ones uncovered, to curate a captivating forgotten bookmark collection for exhibition purposes.

This exploration of written ephemera not only highlights the transient nature of such materials but also underscores the potential for these seemingly ordinary pieces to offer glimpses into the lives, thoughts, and creativity of their creators.

As we navigate through the digital landscape of modern communication, the Forgotten Bookmarks Project serves as a poignant reminder of the beauty and significance of handwritten communication. Through the discovery of lost and abandoned bookmarks, we are granted a unique glimpse into the past, where intimate thoughts and emotions were captured on pieces of paper. Despite the challenges of identifying owners, the preservation of these ephemeral treasures unveils the diverse ways in which individuals express themselves through written materials.
