From crumpled receipts to faded membership cards, bookmarks can offer a glimpse into a reader's past – a story hidden within the pages of a book left forgotten. The Forgotten Bookmarks project shines a light on these fragments of the past, revealing a tapestry of memories, emotions, and mysteries encapsulated within these everyday items.
The Art of Discovery
Imagine stumbling upon a weathered business card tucked inside a second-hand novel or finding a well-worn ticket stub marking a crucial chapter in someone's life. Each bookmark holds a narrative waiting to be uncovered, offering a fleeting connection to a stranger's world. With each discovery, a sense of nostalgia and curiosity intertwines, kindling a desire to piece together the enigmatic tales behind these artifacts.
Research Results:
Official documents are one bookmark category that library personnel cannot emphasize enough not to use as a bookmark. A total of two hundred thirty-two official documents were discovered: There were seventy-four receipts, twenty-nine business cards, twenty-three advertisements, twenty-two contract-type business documents, nineteen tickets, sixteen bills and money, thirteen trading cards, eleven school documents, six memberships and certificates, five food wrappers, four pamphlets, three notices, two reports, score cards, and menus each, and one regular certificate discovered. The most discovered official documents were receipts from fast food restaurants, restaurants, and gas stations. Baseball tickets and airline tickets were the most common types of tickets discovered in books. Birth certificates to military certifications were all available. Advertisements included everything from a little movie poster to a canning label. The majority of the contract-type business documents were import documents. Library employees advise against using official documents as bookmarks because if they are left behind, it is not always possible to return them to their rightful owners and they are frequently shredded when library workers are unable to identify the owner's information. Official documents such as a driver's license and a social security card have been found and safely returned to their owners, but readers should avoid using official documents as bookmarks because they can be found and taken by anyone, resulting in documentation, money, and identity theft.
